epiphanies/surrender/the eureka hunt

in lieu of our discussion on what it means to surrender - fascinating article about people who experience "profound" epiphanies in intense moments of surrender (and, in the case of this fireman, save their lives by doing so) - is it from a higher source? or merely something that is always within us that we tap into in moments of intense stress? lots of interesting questions...link is here: http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2008/07/28/080728fa_fact_lehrer

thanks for this post Rachel!!!

what sticks out most for me is that insight is almost ENTIRELY subconscious. insight seems to be beyond our logical "methodical" mind. i also find it interesting that insight is mostly associative in nature. i heard a podcast recently (again from nyas) about happiness and its relationship with our so-called "metaphorical capacity." that joy we seem to experience when things remind us of other things...he postulates that since this increases with age, that we are therefore happier with age...which didn't totally jibe with how i see the world, but anyhow it is an interesting lecture...here's the link in case you are interested...
